Viriditas, 2026

viriditas is a burial garment designed to help humans embrace the circularity of ecosystems, in which matter is continuously transformed and exists simultaneously in states of growth and decay. The project takes its name from the term viriditas introduced by Hildegard von Bingen to describe the life-giving vitality present in plants, human bodies and the earth itself. This notion of vitality, understood not as permanence but as continuous transformation, forms the conceptual foundation of this work.

The suit is composed of linen textile and woollen felt which become a surface for seedlings to sprout as a remainder of the reoccurring presence of life. The materials are locally sourced and the garment is manufactured by the designer in The Netherlands. During the production of the garment, the loved ones of the departed are encouraged to engage with the suit by helping lay out the pattern of the plants that are to take root in the garment.

The primary focus of this project is its positioning of funerary practices as sites of ecological participation rather than separation. By proposing garments that support growth and decay simultaneously, viriditas reframes death as an opportunity to reconnect with our surroundings in our passing, reentewring the ecosystem to nourish new life. The combination of plant-based and animal-based materials, alongside living organisms, reflects this commitment to material continuity across life and death.
